Dr. Leroy Hood is a luminary in the biotechnology field and is best known for developing the DNA & protein gene sequencers and synthesizers which paved the way for the successful mapping of the human genome. Dr. Hood graduated in 1964 from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine and received his PhD in biochemistry from Caltech in 1968. Over his long career, Dr. Hood has published over 750 peer reviewed articles and helped found 15 biotech companies including Amgen, Applied Biosystems, Integrated Diagnostics and Arivale. He has won numerous awards including the National Medal of Science from President Obama in 2013, the Heinz Award for pioneering work in Systems Biology in 2006, the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology in 2002, and the Lasker Award for Studies of Immune Diversity in 1987. Dr. Hood is one of only 15 scientists in the world to be a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.
